Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The jet ski docks on the bay side of Destin had machines sitting on the lift at 10am Tuesday for the first time since May, and the hourly rate came down with the crowd. This is the week jet skiing in Destin gets cheap, calm, and uncrowded, and the questions have shifted from can we get two machines to what does it cost now, who is allowed to drive, and what the weather rules are on the day hurricane season peaks.

Prices, deposits, and booking
How much is a jet ski rental in Destin in September 2026?
Straight rentals dropped to 85 to 150 dollars an hour on Tuesday, September 8, depending on the machine and whether it is a weekday; half-hour rates are 60 to 90 where offered. Guided tours run 150 to 200 per machine for 60 to 90 minutes with the route and dolphin stops included. That is 15 to 25 percent under the holiday weekend, and several booking pages still show the summer number, so ask.
What is the deposit, and what does the damage waiver cover?
A 500 to 1,000 dollar hold per machine on a credit card, placed at check-in and released after the return inspection, usually within three to five business days. The damage waiver, 20 to 40 dollars per machine, caps your exposure for scuffs, a bent ride plate, or a lost lanyard; it does not cover a grounding on the bay flats, a collision, or a late return. This week the most common deduction is the quarter-hour late fee.
How far ahead should I book this week?
One to two days Monday through Thursday; three to four days for Friday and Saturday mornings. Cancellations get reposted between 7 and 9am, and a 7:30am call for a same-day 9am pair works most days in September. Two-machine bookings are easy again; groups of four or more machines still need the lead time.
If the operator cancels for weather, do I get a refund?
Yes - a full refund or free reschedule whenever the operator makes the call, at every licensed jet ski livery in Destin. If you cancel, expect a 24 to 48 hour notice rule with forfeiture inside it. Once a tropical watch or warning is posted for Okaloosa County, fleets come out of the water and every affected booking is refunded.
Age, license, and legal rules
How old do you have to be to rent or drive a jet ski in Florida?
Florida sets two ages: you must be at least 14 to operate a personal watercraft, and at least 18 to rent one. In practice the contract holder is 18 or older and a 14 to 17-year-old can drive with that adult on the dock or on the water, subject to the operator's own policy, which is often 16. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 also needs a Florida boater education card to operate; the livery issues a temporary certificate after a short test at checkout.
Do I have to wear a life jacket on a jet ski?
Yes, every rider, at all times, and it has to be a Coast Guard-approved non-inflatable jacket. The engine cut-off lanyard has to be clipped to the operator. Operators supply both; bring your own only if it is a proper Type III and you prefer the fit.
What time do jet skis have to be back?
Florida prohibits operating a personal watercraft from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise. Sunset is right around 7pm this week, so rental fleets take their last hour at 5 or 6pm and are off the water well before the legal cutoff. Morning launches between 8 and 10am are the calm ones.
Where am I allowed to ride, and where is off limits?
Rental machines stay inside Choctawhatchee Bay. The East Pass jetties are the boundary, GPS trackers on most fleets flag a crossing, and Destin Harbor is idle speed the whole way through. Inside the bay, most operators mark a riding zone from the Destin Bridge east toward the Mid-Bay Bridge and around the Crab Island anchorage. Jumping another boat's wake unreasonably close to it, or weaving through traffic, is illegal for personal watercraft under Florida law, and September's empty bay makes it obvious who is doing it.

Is the week after Labor Day a good time to jet ski in Destin?
The best week of the season on paper. From Tuesday, September 8, 2026 the holiday crowd is gone, the bay is mid-80s and glassy on an 8 to 10am launch, hourly rates are at shoulder levels, and pairs of machines are bookable a day or two out with cancellations reposted between 7 and 9am. The 2 to 5pm storm window is loosening but still builds two or three afternoons a week, so ride in the morning. Plan around September 10, the statistical peak of Atlantic hurricane season: check the tropical outlook the night before, and if a watch is posted for the Panhandle assume the fleet comes out.
Is Crab Island still a good stop, and can we get off the ski?
Better than it has been since spring. The sandbar is one to four feet deep at low tide, the anchorage is nearly empty on weekdays, and operators that allow a Crab Island stop let you idle in, step off in waist-deep water, and stand next to the machine. Shuffle your feet - late summer is stingray season on the flats - and keep the lanyard on your wrist even while standing.
What happens if a storm builds while we are out?
Head straight back at a steady pace; the operator will usually call or text the fleet in when radar shows a cell approaching, and time lost to a weather recall is credited or refunded. Do not shelter under the Destin Bridge, which is a channel, and do not try to wait it out at the sandbar. September cells cross the bay in about 30 minutes and mostly clear by dinner.
Practical questions
Can two people ride one jet ski, and is it cheaper?
Yes, nearly every rental machine is a three-seat model rated for two adults or an adult and a child, and a two-up rental costs the same per hour as a solo one, so two riders on one ski halves the cost per person. The passenger has to meet the operator's minimum age, usually five to six, and wears a life jacket. Three-up is allowed on rated machines but is slow and wet; two is the sweet spot.
What should I wear and bring?
A swimsuit with a rash guard or a shirt for sun, water shoes for the sandbar, a lanyard-strap for sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen applied before you get on, and nothing in your pockets that cannot get wet. Phones go in the operator's dry box or a floating pouch. Leave the cooler at the dock - most machines have no usable storage, and alcohol before or during a rental is a contract violation and, above 0.08, a BUI.
