Harbor Loop

The Classic Harbor Loop is the go-to route for first-timers and families. You'll cruise along the docks of Destin Harbor, past the colorful charter fishing fleet, and circle back through the calm inland waters west of the harbor bridge. Boat traffic is moderate, so you'll want to obey posted no-wake zones and keep speeds sensible near the docks.

This is a great shakedown route to get comfortable on the machine before venturing further out. You'll see dolphins frequently in the harbor — slow down and give them space if you spot them nearby.

Crab Island Run

Crab Island is a shallow, submerged sandbar just north of the Destin Harbor bridge — and it's the social hub of Destin's waterway scene. Hundreds of boats, pontoons, kayakers, and jet skiers congregate here daily from late spring through early fall. The route from most rental docks takes you under (or around) the Mid-Bay Bridge and across the calm bay waters to the sandbar.

Arriving by jet ski is genuinely one of the most fun ways to experience Crab Island. You can pull right up to the sandbar in the shallow water, wade around, grab a snack from the floating food vendors, and then hop back on and ride home. Round-trip, figure on spending 2–3 hours if you want to actually hang out at the island.

East Pass Inlet Run

East Pass is the narrow inlet connecting Destin Harbor to the Gulf of Mexico, and it's where the real excitement is. As you exit the harbor, the protected calm water transitions into open Gulf chop — and if the winds are up, you'll get waves that make for an exhilarating ride. Most rental agreements allow riding in the East Pass area, but check with your operator before heading toward the Gulf.

The best part of the East Pass run is the contrast: ride out through the pass, feel the Gulf swell beneath you, then ease back into the harbor for a calm return trip. This route is best suited for riders who are already comfortable on a jet ski at speed. The currents in the pass can be strong, especially during tidal changes, so respect the water and keep your life jacket on.

Bay Crossing

For riders who want to really open it up, the Choctawhatchee Bay offers miles of wide-open water stretching north and east from Destin Harbor. The bay is large enough that you can ride at full throttle for extended stretches, which isn't possible in the tighter harbor. On a calm day, the bay feels almost like glass — perfect for high-speed runs.

Popular landmarks along the bay include the Boggy Bayou area, Fort Walton Beach waterfront, and the quiet residential canal systems off the main bay. This route requires a full-day rental (or a multi-hour rental) and you should make sure your rental includes fuel allowance for extended distances. Always tell the rental company where you plan to go — most require you to stay within a defined radius, and the bay may or may not be included.
